Your aim is to be able to design a solution for an application of geographical information. On completion of this topic you should be able to:
  • exemplify the protocols and procedures involved in spatial data modelling, including the choice of phenomena to model, their entity type and data model,
  • evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different data models and data structures for a given purpose,
  • explain and exemplify the layer- and database approaches to storing spatial data,
  • outline the role of database management systems and demonstrate queries using SQL,
  • apply techniques for spatial analysis using different data models, and
  • select appropriate forms of visualising the results of spatial queries and analysis.
