Your aim is to understand the remote sensing system and the model-based approach to image analysis. Your first task is to understand what is measured by remote sensing instruments and your second task is to develop a framework for transforming those measurements into useful information through the processes of pre-processing, image enhancement and information extraction. By the end of this topic you should be able to:

  • identify properties of electromagnetic radiation and characterise sources of electromagnetic radiation
  • explain differences in the spectral reflectance of Earth surfaces
  • assess the contribution of different Earth observation missions and write specifications for the data to be acquired by new missions
  • identify 5 domains in which information might be contained in remotely sensed images and exemplify how that information can be exploited
  • explain forward modelling and model inversion and their roles in image interpretation.
